EMI e-Forums are 1-hour, moderated, webinar discussion forums that provide an opportunity for EMI and the emergency management community to discuss matters of interest on national preparedness training.

EMI e-Forums facilitate a discussion of whole community-presented best practices. The panel members are whole community, with topics relevant to whole community. These exchanges of ideas are free of charge and available to anyone who wishes to participate.

Description: Crisis planning for large events is now on the mind of many emergency managers due to the recent awful attacks overseas. This concern is especially high for private sector companies that host thousands of people at events or on their sites. Our upcoming IAEM Think Tank will provide a behind-the-scenes look at large event crisis planning from a private sector perspective and explain how to engage with government responders to develop a seamless response plan.


Honolulu Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC)

The Honolulu Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) is a volunteer organization charged with bringing together local government, communities, academia, and industries as a resource for enhanced hazardous materials (HAZMAT) preparedness, planning and emergency response within the City and County of Honolulu. The LEPC ensures local hazard analysis is incorporated into planning for HAZMAT incidents into the local emergency management plan and annexes; assessing capabilities and developing HAZMAT response capability using local resources, contractors; training responders; and exercising the plan.

The Honolulu LEPC serves as a focal point for information and discussion about planning for emergencies involving hazardous substances as required under Public Law 99-499, the Superfund Amendment and Reauthorization Act (SARA) of 1986 (SARA Title III), also known as the Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-Know Act (EPCRA). The intention of EPCRA is to increase the public’s knowledge of and access to information about the presence of hazardous chemicals in their local communities, including chemical releases to land, air and water.

Meetings of the Honolulu LEPC are open to the public and posted in accordance to the Open Meeting Law. Meetings are held quarterly, typically in the City and County of Honolulu, Emergency Operation Center (EOC), at the Frank F. Fasi Municipal Building, 650 South King Street, Honolulu, HI 96813, Basement, at 0900-1100 hrs. A copy of the agenda for each meeting is available at the City Clerk’s Office and Department of Emergency Management at least six (6) days in advance of the meeting. We encouraged the public to attend Honolulu LEPC meetings.

“Webinar #1: Overview and "The Case for the Case”

This webinar series provides an overview of the use of cases in teaching emergency management higher education programs. The first session is designed to stimulate thinking about the diversity of ways in which cases can be used in teaching. During the webinar, the rationale for using cases to support learning and assessment will be explained, and three different types of learning outcomes associated with the use of cases will be offered. Examples of a variety of approaches to using cases at both the undergraduate and graduate levels will be offered, and principles for designing case-based learning activities will be discussed. The remaining webinars in this series will focus in more detail on specific approaches to the use of cases in teaching in emergency management higher education programs for both teaching and assessment.
